Supervision
I work in an integrative relational way. All the research shows that a good supervisory relationship is the most important element for effective supervision just as this is also true for the counsellor/client relationship. Early on in training it is easy to feel vulnerable, overwhelmed and exposed in supervision. It is easy to feel that you have chosen the wrong career. A good relationship can help you through these difficulties and support you to feel more comfortable and stable. I use an integrative approach as I believe we need to attune to each client’s needs individually so the more tools and approaches we are able to offer the better.
I always start with a check-in so that we can look at what is in your foreground as this will affect the lens through which you are experiencing the world, including your clients, at that moment in time as this will be impacting your work. We work towards a contract during the session which gives us the focus for that particular session.
My general aims are to ensure the quality of the work by:
- Develop understanding and skills within the work.
- Give information and another perspective concerning the work.
- Explore both content and process.
- Provide a space to explore and express personal distress which might occur in the transference or counter-transference.
- Ensure that the supervisee is not left with difficulties, problems and projections that have arisen in the counter-transference.
- Encourage the planning and utilization of personal and professional resources and creativity.
- Ensuring ethical practice.
